Dear Mayor Brodie and Members of Richmond City Council, I support Council’s responsibility to oppose racism and discrimination. The publicly available minutes record Resolution R26/14-10, but they do not indicate what underlying materials or translations Council reviewed, whether the person referred to was invited to respond, or what process was contemplated by the direction concerning the BC Human Rights Tribunal. I respectfully ask Council to clarify those points. I believe that a complete record, transparent reasons, and a reasonable opportunity to respond would strengthen public confidence in Council’s decision-making process. After that record is clarified, I ask Council to consider whether reconsideration, rescission, amendment, or another transparent process is appropriate. This request does not defend discriminatory expression. It asks Council to address the issue on a complete and transparent record. Thank you.
